Miss, you're wearing makeup?

Have you ever spent much time around pre-teenagers? No? You should. They are the best. Seriously, my day is made better everyday by hanging out with 100+ 7th graders. They are hilarious, weird, awkward, and observant. I use the word observant extremely specifically. You see, if it is academic content they are blind and deaf to it, but if it has to do with how I look, talk, or act you can bet they notice any changes.

I am not a huge fan of makeup. I don't like how it feels on my face, I'm not talented at putting it on, and I like being able to rub my eyes without worrying about looking like a raccoon afterward. Also, I laugh a lot, and when I laugh I always cry which also results in raccoon eyes. Not cute. So, I frequently come to school with no makeup on. I'm trying to get better about about. I try to wear it at least 3 days a week to make it look like I'm trying. I tend to look about 14 if I don't wear it, which isn't great for teaching 12 year olds.

All that being said, my kids are more used to me not having makeup as opposed to having it on. Also, my hair usually stays in a bun. Today, I realized this is not a good move. I need to either wear it always or never wear it. I need to either fix my hair always or always have a bun. I came to this conclusion during the following conversation:

As I am trying to help a student understand his assignment during class,

Student: "miss, you got makeup on today?!"

Me: "yes, a little. So, explain to me what hydro-tropism is"

Student: "But, miss, you have on just eyeliner?"

Me: "Eyeliner, mascara, foundation, the works. Now what is hydro-tropism?"

Student: "Miss, why you decided to wear makeup today and not before?"

Me: "I don't know I just did. Hydro-tropism"

Student: "Water. So, miss, why you don't wear your hair like that?" (Points to my curled hair on my ID picture)

Me: "This mess on my head is easier and faster than that. Now what is a positive response to hydro-tropism?"

Student: "Miss, you should wear it like that more times."

As we were having this ridiculous conversation, I decided I will choose. I will have to stop being lazy, begin to look professional, and stop being a distraction to my kids. 7th graders obviously can't handle the change day to day. Haha.

Sincerely,

Miss
